ERTC Weekly Update - Week of June 3

Was ERTC the last part of your life that didn’t have hockey talk? Well, not anymore! Our beloved local hockey team has made the final round, and with that means we have to consider that people from our club would like to watch the games. As such, check out this poll about possibilities to move our rides if they conflict with games. https://forms.gle/G91wsUJBXkYts7J96

CLUB UPDATES:

  • Skill Sessions Continue with Session 4 tomorrow. Don’t fret if you’ve missed one or both of the previous sessions, we would still love to have you out. Learn more about the different streams and what we cover here: https://www.ertc.org/skills attendance is FREE with your membership.

The final session will have 2 options (depending on makeup) - one will be a group ride in a quieter area of town, but on open roads, and one will be more skills such as curb hopping and higher speed cornering, and with some group riding town in, but still in the area we have been practising skills in. Meet up location for both remains the same.

  • We are now needing general volunteers for the Pigeon Lake Road Race and Fondo. Things are a little different this year and I will be putting up a volunteer information sheet soon. In the meantime, here is the Volunteer Signup Form - https://volunteersignup.org/4PYQK

RIDE UPDATES:

  • Nick is away, so no Shootout this Saturday. Tempo ride instead if that’s your jam.

RACE UPDATES:

GENERAL REMINDERS:

  • Official Rides are posted on strava. If you haven’t requested to join, please do so here: https://www.strava.com/clubs/2845 iff you’ve applied and haven’t heard back, e-mail me, but first, make sure your strava name matches your registration name.

  • Day to day communication and general chatter is via slack. You can join here: https://join.slack.com/t/edmontonroada-7u36621/shared_invite/zt-1t5qvezds-JotWB~e_EJcXrD9NArQarA - this is where you can get real time updates about unofficial rides, talk bikes with club members, and sell your stuff to other club members! If you identify as female and would like to be included in the WoERTC communications and event announcements, please message Heather Curtis on Slack to be added to the private WoERTC channel.

  • Do you swing both ways cycling and have a love for both slicks and knobbies? Many in our club do, and our very own Tiffany Baker offers private mountain biking lessons for beginner to intermediate riders. PMBI certified, and now swinging more to the knobby-life, Tiffany is a great resource to build or level up your trail skills. Email her at Tiffany@Your-Edge.ca for more info and check out her website. https://www.your-edge.ca/your-mountain-biking-edge

  • The membership cards are here! If you have been attending rides you may have already gotten one, but if you haven’t they will be carried by all the ride leaders so if it is your first ride, just ask, they will probably have some on them! We will not be mailing these out to you, so the only way to get one is to show up on a ride. Remember to fill out the emergency contact portion of the card. While club leadership has access to your emergency contact information, having it on your person allows anyone else to call someone you trust without contacting us first. This membership card also serves as your proof of membership when getting your discount at the physical location for Hardcore Bikes and Healthcare Solutions. The QR code will lead you to the private site where you can find the discount code for online shopping at 7 Summit Snacks Healthcare Solutions, and when booking online at Flexion.

ERTC Weekly Update - Week of May 27

This one comes to you bright and early cause it's nice out tonight and I’d rather be riding!

Coming up soon is our clothing order deadline - it’s coming up this Friday on May 31st. If we don’t have stock of something locally at https://www.ertc.org/teamkit or if its an uncommon size or item, you will need to order directly from Rogelli over at https://www.rogellicanada.com/ertc - orders placed this way will ship directly to your home and have a time delay as items ordered this way haven’t been made yet. The cut off times and estimated delivery dates are listed on the website, however we have very little control over the delivery date. You can join the #clothing channel on slack to receive more frequent clothing updates and ask any questions you have about materials, quality and fit, or to arrange a try-on session.

ERTC Weekly Update - Week of May 20

Rain Rain go away :(

This week I come to you asking for some help - I need some help running the Pigeon Lake Road Race this year and without 2 people signing on, I think I am going to have to cancel it. It takes place on June 29 this year (Canada Day Long Weekend).

I need: A volunteer coordinator - you will be responsible for making sure we have volunteers and that they know what to do. I have all the documentation already written up for what to do, so you will just be making sure volunteers know it and such. I can help you out with this.

A submission/logistics coordinator - you will be responsible for the permits and general logistics. I can help you out with this as well. I have all the forms and contacts but you will need to actually submit and follow up accordingly. You’ll also work with the volunteer coordinator.

Neither of these positions require you to be present on race day, although it would be smoother if you were. I can take care of all race day duties and any handoff. I have previously run these races alone but with our club growing, I will need more help.  Email or DM me if you are interested.

CLUB UPDATES:

  • If you are attending the Skill Sessions - they will happen as long as it isn’t raining. This does mean that if it is cooler, make sure you dress for some standing around. For the temperatures we anticipate tomorrow, I would suggest at least a thermal layer as well as a windbreaker. Better to be too warm than too cold.

  • The clothing float order is finally in! New to the club this year and want new kit NOW? Check out our webstore at https://www.ertc.org/teamkit - all items ordered this way are available for immediate pick-up. You will be contacted upon completion to coordinate a time for you to pick it up.

If the webstore does not have the size or items you need, you will need to order from the Rogelli online shop here: https://www.rogellicanada.com/ertc - orders placed this way will ship directly to your home and have a time delay as items ordered this way haven’t been made yet. The cut off times and estimated delivery dates are listed on the website, however we have very little control over the delivery date. The cutoff date for the current order is May 30. You can join the #clothing channel on slack to receive more frequent clothing updates and ask any questions you have about materials, quality and fit, or to arrange a try-on session.

  • We have another exciting event announcement just for WoERTC! Yoga in the Park! Come join the Women of ERTC on May 24 at Ezio Faraone Park for a relaxing evening of yoga with stretches/poses geared towards cyclists. Note: this event is only open to those who identify as female. RSVP here: https://www.eventbrite.ca/e/woertc-yoga-in-the-park-tickets-866886961237

ERTC Weekly Update - Week of May 13

Hey everyone, after a smoky weekend with cancelled rides, I thought a review of our smoke policy was in order. After some consideration, we will be using PurpleAir exclusively - https://map.purpleair.com/1/mAQI/a10/p604800/cC4#9.01/53.5181/-113.2308 - and looking for values over 150 in determining if rides will be cancelled or not. If you wish to replicate it for yourself, the settings we are using is the US EPA PM2.5 AQI method with the LRAPA correction factor. Special Air Quality Advisories issued by Environment Canada will also provide additional consideration when making a call. We will no longer be using Environment Canada’s AQHI. Without going into too much detail, moving away from the the National AQHI allows us to be more responsive to quickly changing air quality conditions. Ride leaders will continue to review how this affects our rides and if we feel that this is too restrictive or not restrictive enough we will revise it (Yes, we are aware of the provincially calculated AQHI as well.)

All ride cancellations will be communicated primarily through Strava, which will push real time updates to your phone as long as you RSVP. We will endeavor to make ride calls on air quality cancellations an hour out from ride time, as while they can change quickly, they don’t change that quickly (unlike rain, whereby if it is threatening but not actually raining, we will ride.) Rides that are on the cusp (areas that are reading 135-165) will be assessed by your ride leader based on where you are riding, and the wind direction, and forecasts, however, in general we want rides to happen and want to balance getting out there and your safety. In general, no updates means the ride is happening.

All rides that happen that are not official rides (ie, “unofficial ride/pick up ride”) are unsanctioned by the ABA / ERTC and there will be no liability coverage in event of an incident. These rides may also have variable routes with unclear expectations of pace or regrouping spots. These rides can and will happen from time to time and we cannot discourage you from attending these rides if you so wish. You are always welcome to use Slack to propose unofficial rides during any time (and not just cancellations).

Club Updates:

  • The membership cards are here! If you have been attending rides you may have already gotten one, but if you haven’t they will be carried by all the ride leaders so if it is your first ride, just ask, they will probably have some on them! • As mentioned before, being a long weekend, feel free to use slack to propose a ride on holiday Monday during the day, you’ll probably get some takers!

ERTC Weekly Update - Week of May 6

Hey everyone! Another busy week for ERTC!

Friday’s social was a stunning success, with lots of old and new faces showing up and having a great time, and learning more about the club and our sponsors. Shoutout to our Women’s Cycling Manager, Heather Curtis, for the idea and getting the ball rolling on that! A note from Heather: Thank you to everyone who came out to our season kick-off event this past Friday at Arcadia! It was amazing to see such a great turnout with over 70 people. Stay tuned for details on future social events.

Some items I wanted to note about our skill sessions that I have been meaning to get out:

  1. The learn to group ride sessions are NOT mandatory for those new to ERTC to join us on other rides, however we highly recommend all riders of all skill levels to show up. There are multiple streams so everyone can get something out of this. Learn more here: https://www.ertc.org/skills and RSVP on our strava: https://www.strava.com/clubs/2845

  2. You do not need to attend all of the sessions. Attend as many as you like, you will get out as much as you put in!

  3. If you are new to the club, we highly recommend you come out to a WoERTC Monday, Tuesday (Skills or Intervals), or Thursday Hills prior to coming to a weekend group ride, regardless of your previous riding experience, however this is not mandatory. This is mostly to ensure that you know how we do our hand signals and how we ride in town, as well as to figure out your relative fitness levels and ask any questions before you commit to a 100km ride on the weekend with people you’ve never met before. Barring this, coming out to a Lite ride is also available as these rides will have more of a learning environment, while Tempo/Shootout/Race Pace rides discussions on the rules will be light (however everyone is still happy to answer questions).

  4. The skill sessions will be a fair bit of standing around, so dress for that, however the rain policy still applies. Based on the forecast tomorrow, I am not confident it will go ahead, however the forecast may change. Remember to RSVP on strava in order to get any notifications about cancellations pushed to your phone.

  5. They are open to everyone, so invite your cycling-interested friends! $75 for 4 weeks. All of it can be applied to credit for a full membership. Check the link above.

CLUB UPDATES:

  • We have another exciting event announcement just for WoERTC! Yoga in the Park! Come join the Women of ERTC on May 24 at Ezio Faraone Park for a relaxing evening of yoga with stretches/poses geared towards cyclists.

GENERAL REMINDERS:

ERTC Weekly Update - Week of April 22

Hey everyone! Our big news this week is that we’ve picked up a handful of new sponsors and they’ll be showing up on our next ordering round of jerseys. I’ll let you guys know when the designs on the website are updated, but the more keen eyed among you might have seen them live on our website. Details on how to claim these benefits to follow up.

Here they are! (In no particular order)

Hardcore Bikes https://www.hardcorebikes.ca/

Our partner in offering a full spectrum of rides, they have signed on as a shop sponsor for 2024. Without getting into too much detail, they will be supporting our events, our ride leaders, as well as helping us grow our membership. Current year members will receive a 10% discount off parts and accessories.

We are happy to have Hardcore Bikes as a shop sponsor this year, and highly recommend using them for all your service and your local source for bike stuff!

Not to worry, ERTC continues to retain full control over the running of the club and who we work with. Our ride sharing agreement with them continues whereby ERTC members can ride provisionally with Hardcore without any additional cost, and their members can ride with us. Let me know if this interests you, as they use a different ride platform then we do.

7Summit Snacks https://sevensummitssnacks.com/

7 Summit Snacks has signed on as a sponsor of our club, offering a selection of delicious ride snacks in the form of delicious delicious chocolate in 3 different varieties. They’ve chosen to give us a discount on web orders (coupon code in your inbox) and support our events.

Rosso https://www.rossopizzeria.ca/

A previous supporter of our AGM, we’ve deepened our relationship with them, with 10% off your first beer and pizza on Thursday nights, and Sunday / Saturday afternoons, post ride. In addition they will be supporting more of our events. To access this discount, you must arrive at Rosso as a group with the ride leader - the discount is applied via the ride leader.

Healthcare Solutions https://healthcaresolutions.ca/

Technically not a new sponsor, we have come up with a solution to ensure that you are able to get your discount at the store. They will also be furthering their support for our events.

WoERTC Leadership Update

WoERTC Leadership Update

Same empowering environment, new leadership

With change comes possibility…

Since the Women of ERTC’s inception in 2015 - I’ve been at the helm. And while I’ve deeply enjoyed helping create such an inclusive and supporting space for women in road cycling, the time has come to pass the leadership torch. My heart is full of gratitude to the 220 women who have spent time on bikes with us over the years, and I’m beyond proud that women have continually represented 36% of the club since 2016.

I’m so excited to introduce to you ERTC’s new Women’s Cycling Manager, and her mighty support team, who are going to take our group further and farther than we’ve already come….Welcome Heather, Claire and Leandra!!

Thank you all for an amazing 8 years. I can’t wait to see what Heather, Claire and Leandra have in store for this next season and beyond.

~Tiffany
(I’m not actually going anywhere, I’ll still be on rides (but now at the back, that’ll be new), but you’ll likely see me more often on gravel roads or single track. #rideallthebikes)

Without further ado - meet your new Women of ERTC Leadership Team!

From Left to Right: Heather Curtis, Claire Smith, Leandra Grenier-Green

Heather Curtis: Women’s Cycling Manager

Hi, I’m Heather (she/her) and I’m very excited to take on this role with ERTC! I joined the club in 2023 after exploring road cycling in Edmonton and abroad for a couple years. I fell in love with cycling’s adventurous nature during the pandemic and can’t wait to seek out new distances and locations. While not on my bike, I also enjoy running, skiing, photography and checking out bakeries!

Claire Smith: Ride Leader

Hello, I'm Claire (she/her)! This will be my second year in ERTC and my 4th year cycling. But don't worry - what I lack in bike experience, I make up for with enthusiasm! I'm stoked for another season of chats and snacks with a side of bikes. Ride on!

Leandra Grenier-Green: Ride Leader

Hey bike friends, I’m Leandra (she/her). I’m new to cycling but when I love something, I go all in. I started cycling to compete in triathlons and quickly grew to love it more than swimming or running. I’ve made all the newbie mistakes on group rides and still managed to love it so if you’re nervous, don’t be!

Heather, Claire and Leandra will share with everyone their grand plans for this season a bit closer to when everyone is considering pulling out their bikes again. Although with the weather, that could be now in some places!

Until then, please join me in welcoming and thanking them for taking on such a vital role not only in ERTC, but in the broader women’s cycling community.

I truly know I’m leaving the WoERTC in AMAZING hands.

ERTC Bi-Weekly Update - Week of October 23

Hey everyone! With the first snow of the season it’s safe to say that rides here on out will be really rare and likely be wrapped up until next year. With that in mind, it is time to set the date for our AGM. Our AGM will be held on November 24, 2023, at 6:30PM, with official proceedings at 7:00PM. We do not have a venue secured yet however wanted to make sure the date was saved. As usual, the AGM is catered, with beverages provided by Blindman and Costco. Keep your eyes peeled for an update with location in the future. Our AGM provides an opportunity to us to present critical decisions to the club, as well as elect our executive positions. As it is an odd year, the VP and Women’s Cycling Coordinator is up for election. More on the positions here: https://www.ertc.org/the-executive-team

As usual, this comes with our yearly satisfaction survey here: https://forms.gle/txjKsCYtPbVyWRZj9 The form will ask you for an email but this is to ensure that you can only submit the survey once. I do not see your email, and the survey is anonymous. While you probably hear this a ton, we really do take the time to review all the answers and think about tweaks and changes to the club we can do for next year.

This is also the time to start thinking about becoming a ride leader for next year. You don’t have to make a decision now but if you found yourself coming regularly to rides, or love the group you were riding with, why not become a ride leader and be rewarded? We buy our ride leaders kit, as well as other perks. There is no requirement to be fast or to be in front, but there is a requirement for you to be willing to know where you are going (GPS is allowed, of course) and be willing to represent the club, its values, and communicate the intent of the ride to it’s participants in a clear manner.

ERTC Weekly Update - Week of September 11

We interrupt your regular normal weekly update for 1 really important message. Ok, maybe 1.5!

We really still need volunteers for this weekend’s (September 17) CX races. We still do not have enough people to run a safe race at the time of this writing. The most important items we currently need is someone to make a Costco order / run (this needs a vehicle, obviously), and someone to be a volunteer coordinator (basically co-direct the race). Not sure what you’ll be doing for the race? Check out the volunteer description here: https://www.ertc.org/socvd and sign up for volunteering here: https://volunteersignup.org/KPY9Y

Ok, so the .5 - we still have a couple of spots open for the CX skills tomorrow. It was postponed from last week due to smoke so the new dates are September 12 and 19, starting at 6:30, at Argyll Park (https://goo.gl/maps/EE5MX9pbmyFUHjuY7) E-mail or message me for enrollment.

A big final weekend of skinny tire events with Amanda, Dakota, and Jakob representing ERTC at Track Provincials (Hey now, sometimes the T means something…) Check out the race report from Amanda! - Race report!!! ERTC does Track Provincials!! Amanda, Dakota, and Jakob rode this weekend and represented in a mix of endurance and sprint events. Both guys did their first track provs ever and did well! Jakob raced almost everything, and is the new Men’s Elite scratch race Provincial Champion and podiumed in the IP and Elimination. Dakota raced the IP, points, and TT and beat his target IP time by 15 seconds. With the passing of the August long weekend, we begin our transition to cross season. While road rides all continue for now, expect to see some programming changes ahead. What’s cross? Well, it’s a celebration of bicycle culture between all types of cycling as the season winds down. You race 30-45 minutes on grass with bikes with 33mm tires and it’s a lot of fun, and extraordinarily hard. Then you hang out with all your bike friends afterwards and heckle everyone else who is racing!

Club Updates:

  1. We are planning a club photoshoot for our website and other promotional material. The club photoshoot will take place on August 16.

    1. We need at least 15 people and will be meeting at our meeting spot for Zoo Hill at 6:00pm that we usually meet at for forwards hills.

    2. The locations of the photo shoot will be Zoo Hill, Laurier Drive, and Legislature Hill. Zoo Hill and Laurier Drive will time approximately an hour, and we will ride to Legislature from Laurier, with another 40 minutes there.

    3. If you have club kit, please wear it, but this is not a strict requirement as not everyone who is part of the club has kit, however plenty of people will have one you can borrow.

    4. It is recommended that you are comfortable riding in a group as some photos will be as a group, but if you are not, then you are still welcome as other photos may have us all split up.

    5. The total time commitment will be approximately 2 hours.

    6. By coming you consent to your image being used on our website and promotional materials.

    7. There will be a strava invite. https://www.strava.com/clubs/2845/group_events/1451337

  2. Starting today, (August 8) YEGCROSS (led by Robin Baille who you may have seen at hills once in awhile) hosts cyclocross based interval workouts. These meet at Kinsmen starting at 6pm. It is recommended that you come with at least 20 minutes of warm up in your legs. More info here: https://www.facebook.com/groups/1635190320143436 you will need to ask to be part of the group. Intervals at the research park on Tuesdays CONTINUE for now.

  3. We are currently organising CX skill clinics as well, so stay tuned!

  4. After some discussion, ERTC will be making an effort to show up to the L’Etape (https://www.letapecanada.com/registration) , and show off our club to the road community at large. (and maybe get a few new members for next year!) What does this mean

    1. Remember to use the ERTC15 coupon code for 15% off.

    2. Wear our jersey and get an extra $15-20 off (TBD based on participants, maybe even more!) Just forward me your receipt and we will get you paid back.

    3. We will be hosting a space in the expo during and afterward. If you can mill about after your event and chat to other people it would be great! We have some print materials you can hand out as well.

    4. Ride your legs off during the event!
