ERTC Weekly Update - Week of September 2

Hi there! I hope you will all be reading this as you come back from your ride in this beautiful weather as that’s definitely what you are doing, right?

Club Announcements:

  1. September 7 - We are looking for volunteers to lead small group rides around the high level bridge area - nothing too fast but someone who is comfortable with the area to show people the possibilities of the area, as part of the “High Level Line Day” (https://www.highlevelline.com/day) - check out the invite from the organizer - “It's our first year and we don't know what kind of crowd to expect, but we are calling on neighbours and community groups to help us out. I'm wondering if you'd be interested in organizing a ride along/around High Level Line that day. Many of our supporters are active transportation and cycling advocates so I see it aligning with ERTC's audience. We're open to ideas, so let me know if you think this is something you'd be interested in being a part of. Thank you!” Email me if you are interested - president@ertc.org as always!

  2. I’ve lowered the membership fee to $70 for the rest of the season so if you have any curious friends looking to join for road or cross, its $40 off, yay!

  3. We are planning a social event for the end of september, please see facebook for a poll on dates and activities.

  4. Intervals is officially over. Looking for something to do on Tuesdays? Throw up a ride on facebook and see if you have any takers, or do YEGCROSS!

  5. September 22 - Keep your calendars free, we will be putting out a call of volunteers and racers for school of cross!

Events and things:

  1. YEGCross - Advanced Intervals (assumes you know basic CX skills and will work on them on your own time) - https://www.facebook.com/groups/1635190320143436/ - happens on Tuesdays

  2. Wednesday Night Cross - If you know, you know. If you don’t, check it out - https://www.facebook.com/events/378284666193931/?event_time_id=378284676193930

  3. September 7 - DV100 - typically the last road event of the year, it’s a great way to cap off the event season. Race or Ride, lots of swag, prizes and people! http://dv100.ca/

ERTC Weekly Update - Week of August 26

HIIIIIDEEEY-HOOO! Thanks for joining me in this week’s installment of “stuff no one ever reads anyways!”

Club Announcements:

  1. I’ve lowered the membership fee to $70 for the rest of the season so if you have any curious friends looking to join for road or cross, its $40 off, yay!

  2. We are planning a social event for the end of september, please see facebook for a poll on dates and activities.

  3. Even with the road season mostly over, Saturdays and Thursdays will continue to run until the snow flies! All rides will be listed on strava but we will be prioritizing these rides as the season goes on.

Events and things:

  1. CROSS. IS. HERE!!!! CXurious? Wikipedia is a good start (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cyclo-cross) but the essence is: it’s really hard and messy for an hour, but then you get to hang out and socialize and make friends with other racers before and after, and is a great way to end the season! Many of us use it to put a nice cap on our outdoor cycling season as the days get shorter and the weather turns colder. There are many great options for cross training this year and due to life events, Coach Tim (who led our CX training sessions) has decided to take a break from coaching us. If you want to get some CX training in, I’ve listed a few options, all endorsed by ERTC:

    • RubberSide Cycling (Beginner to Advanced, Skills Training) - https://www.facebook.com/events/403916500432637/

    • YEGCross - Advanced Intervals (assumes you know basic CX skills and will work on them on your own time) - https://www.facebook.com/groups/1635190320143436/

    • CXTravaganza - CX Community Days (Weekend Camp, All skill levels) - https://www.facebook.com/events/1291608371017228/

  2. MEC Century Ride: https://events.mec.ca/node/248891

  3. September 7 - DV100 - typically the last road event of the year, it’s a great way to cap off the event season. Race or Ride, lots of swag, prizes and people! http://dv100.ca/ ERTC will be fielding a full race team so you will see many familiar faces!

ERTC Weekly Update - Week of August 19

Welp it’s that time of the week (that time being totally late) but anyways, our gravel grinder happened this weekend, check out what Greg had to say about it!

August 17 was the first ERTC gravel race, the Coal Lake Crusher. Well, it was supposed to be a race but we didn't quite get enough registrants so we turned it into an amazing group ride. About 20 of us toured the roads the fast hard packed gravel north of Coal Lake. Some steep punchy climbs and beautiful rural scenery kept it interesting. Everyone loved the course and hoped that we can organize it again next year. We're thinking with some word of mouth and a better date we can get the registrants to make the race happen and have this as an annual event. Also, thanks to Blindman Brewing everyone who showed up got some tasty craft beer!

  • CROSS. IS. COMING!!!! CXurious? Wikipedia is a good start (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cyclo-cross) but the essence is: it’s really hard and messy for an hour, but then you get to hang out and socialize and make friends with other racers before and after, and is a great way to end the season! • August 25 - Little Italy / Giovanni Caboto criterium - I usually don’t push races here but this race will be an event! Pedalhead Road Works is partnering up with Al Centro and Otto to provide an italian culture festival, with this crit as a part of it! Come out, enjoy some of , and your club mates racing and take part in the part in the festivities on a Sunday afternoon! https://www.pedalheadroadworks.com/updates/giro-del-centro

ERTC Weekly Update - Week of August 12

Aigoooo - it’s that time of the week again where I tell you all about the really really cool things that are happening in ERTC-Land! And the more “reallys” I put increases the chances of you reading this, right? The annual Perogy ride was a great success with 16 participants and several dozen perogies were consumed (mostly by me) - We will be trying to organize “Special Edition” rides more often with the aim of continuing to give everyone more options and reasons to ride!

You do not need to have an ABA license to do this ride. http://www.ertc.org/coal-lake-crusher and https://volunteersignup.org/EXQ3K for the volunteersignup! ERTC Weekly Update - Week of July 29

Heyooo! The Tour de l’Alberta was another success, despite the eclectic mix of weather conditions (from blustery rain all the way to blue skies and warmth) which saw at least a dozen ERTC members come out and enjoy the day, with many of them accomplishing their longest distances on a bike ever! The conditions were challenging so to everyone who did it, you’ve done an amazing job!

  1. CROSS. IS. COMING!!!! CXurious? ERTC Weekly Update - Week of July 22

Alrighty, right back at it at the end of the night - Lots to say in this one… First off I want to thank everyone who volunteered at or participated in our Pigeon Lake Road Race! Your participation was instrumental in making our race a success. There were multiple comments from commissaires and racers alike that this was a well organized and attended race!

  1. Tour de l’Alberta is THIS SUNDAY! Sorry if I haven’t been pushing this as much as I usually do, just too much to worry about… anyways, the TdlA is the best organized fondo this side of Red Deer and ERTC shows up in force! Anyway, we have a discount from the organizer - registration is over at https://zone4.ca/register.asp?id=20846 and use ERTCTDA19 for your $15 discount. Registration closes on Saturday, but please don’t give the organizer, Michael, a heart attack by registering last minute!

  2. August 22-25 - Alberta Masters Games - a chance for weekend warriors and cycling enthusiasts to compete in their very own competition for MTB,CX and Road - More information here: https://albertasport.ca/alberta-games/alberta-masters-games/home/sports/ Open to all residents of Alberta over 30, no license required, and if you hold an Elite/Cat1/2 license in a discipline you won’t be allowed to race that discipline.

ERTC Weekly Update - Week of July 8

Heyo, in lieu of a larger update as I am in the midst of race planning, I wanted to take some time to basically just BEG you guys to help with our race this weekend. We need everything on this sheet https://volunteersignup.org/QTYFB I understand y’all have some questions so I’ll answer them. Without a full complement of volunteers, we will not be running this race, as we will not sacrifice safety of our racers just to have an event.

  1. You don’t need flagger training to be a course marshal.

  2. You don’t need to be there right at 8am if you are just helping in the afternoon (although it helps)

  3. You don’t need any special training at all, actually.

  4. You are able to race and help out at the same time - if you are racing in the morning, you can help out in the afternoon, and vice versa. There is plenty of time to transition. Just sign up on the sheet and let me know

  5. If you are driving a car, you don’t need a big one, and your gas will be reimbursed.

  6. You will be fed. And well.

  7. If there are any other questions, you can always hit me up at president@ertc.org

ERTC Weekly Update - Week of June 24

Keepin it short cause we are all busy longingly looking out of our windows at the rain wishing you were riding, right?

  1. Looking for a a full bike fit? Or perhaps just a tweak to your current position? Our club sponsor Shawn from Velofix offers both options!

If you're looking for a full bike fit Shawn offers a two-session option for $189 where he'll look at all the components of a bike fit with you. The sessions are approx 90 min in length and about a week a part to allow for a few rides between sessions.

If your current set-up is close, but not quite right, Shawn offers a one-session touch-up where he'll focus on cleat placement, saddle alignment, and handlebar fit for $109. This session is approx 90 min and a great option both for those just starting in the world of bike fits, or those looking to dial in their current set-up.

For either fit option he can either come to you, or you can go to his shop. And of course, Shawn can order and install any additional parts needed, with the added convenience of doing so right in your driveway.

If you'd like to book either session, or for more information please email Shawn at shawn@velofix.com

  2. Our first “themed” Wednesday Night Ride is going ahead! You might have heard of the “Rules” (http://www.velominati.com/the-rules/comment-page-15/) however this ride is all about breaking as many as you can! See strava for more info, and there might be a treat at the end!

  3. Canada Day Criterium - one of the year’s biggest races in Edmonton, Canada Day Criterium is always an event! Racing, a great atmosphere, and beer gardens! It’s one of the best changes to watch one of the fastest and exciting types of racing up close - If you are interested in watching, they happen at Lendrum Community Center on July 1, from 9am till about 3pm. For the racers, Amanda is leading a course recon on Friday. Keep your eyes on strava for details.

ERTC Weekly Update - Week of June 17

Just gonna go ahead and reiterate our weather policy in light of this week’s forecast - rides are never cancelled unless it’s actively raining. We have this policy precisely because the weather can change so fast around these parts and a poor forecast might never happen or an otherwise sunny day can turn to crap real quick.

Also please remember to RSVP on strava - this lets us have an idea of how many people are coming to our rides, and will also notify you if the time or route have changed, or if the ride has been cancelled.

No other updates this week, folks! Enjoy any ride you manage to go on, even if its a short one due to weather or inside.

ERTC Weekly Update - Week of June 10

It’s too bad our Highwood Pass ride got cancelled - we will be rescheduling at a later, warmer date. Yours truly did the pass anyway - it was a breeze with the 50-60km/h gusting winds and the sideways blowing sleet, rain, and snow! Onward to importanter things!

  1. I usually don’t push race events, but one of the best, well organized ones happens this weekend - Ghost of the Gravel. It’s only a race if you make it a race, but otherwise it is an amazing day on a bike with epic views! Happens this weekend but there is still time to register and find a place closeby to stay (or camp!) The organization is top notch and it is just plain fun. http://deadgoat.ca/ghostofthegravel/

  2. The Ladies Learn to Crit Part 2 is Tommorow (Tuesday) night! https://www.facebook.com/events/521446795054606/ take note of the location as it is DIFFERENT than the last session.

  3. July 1 - ERTC Social - Save the date! Details TBD.

ERTC Weekly Update - Week of June 3

It’s time for the weekly babble that approximately 22.5% of the club reads!

  1. Women’s Learn to Crit clinic tommorow - whats a criterium? It’s the most exciting type of racing that focuses on high speed laps on a tight course - Our very own Amanda Scott and Jessica Lacoursiere are hosting a clinic on cornering and sprinting with a focus on getting you ready for this type of racing becauuuuuuuse… (Event link at https://www.facebook.com/events/610478622768963/ - Research Park at 6:30!)

  2. Castrol Criterium on Wednesday! See the poster, but it’s a great chance to either experience or race a criterium on a safe closed course with no traffic!

  3. There is now a strava event for our Highwood Pass ride on Saturday, including both options, please check it out! Please note that because this is Highwood Pass, there is still the possibility for  cold weather (read: sleet and snow). The forecast is not looking too hot so this ride MAY be rescheduled to a later date due to rain / snow / whatever. Unfortunately a later date means that the road will now be open to traffic but alas… Also of note that the timing is such that you can easily make it a day trip - a long day nonetheless but doable!

ERTC Weekly Update - Week of May 27

It’ll be a scorcher this week! Expect tons of people on our various rides! Excuse the brevity but the weather’s too nice to sit in front of a computer typing these things out!

  1. Wednesday Skill Session rides have now transitioned into ERTC-Lite rides, with a focus on continuing to improve both personal and group riding skills.

  2. Save the date! June 5th will be another Castrol Criterium! Details to follow but we have a special surprise in store!

  3. ERTC often has little “special edition” rides that occur outside of Edmonton. Our first one planned this year will take place at Highwood Pass. Highwood Pass is Canada’s highest paved highway, and is closed to cars before the second week of June, and is a popular spot for cyclists of all skill levels due to this fact! Because the route is an out and back, you can start at multiple points along the ride depending on your fitness level. We are planning this for June 8th and want to have at least 2 options for distance and start location available, including an ERTC-Lite option and will be posting on Strava closer to the date. If you are interested in the ERTC-Lite option, please email ertclite@ertc.org so we can get an idea of whether there is enough interest to ensure we can get a ride leader out.

ERTC Weekly Update - Week of May 20

Annnnd I’m back at this this week! If you preferred Tiffany’s brand of communiques then unfortunately you’re stuck with my… er... rambling musings? As usual we will continue to be using strava for all “official” rides so please join us on there if you would like to stay up to date on all the rides we have going on!

Club Events:

  1. Wednesday is our final learn to ride session (for now, we might have another refresher for new members and people who would like to practice more during the summer!) On the docket is a full on group ride - everyone is welcome and we will be splitting into several groups based on your comfort and ability level.

  2. Interested in racing and don't know where to begin? Our Try Racing Program is for you - with limited spots, it offers a mentored program along with a bit of financial assistance to get you lined up for your first road race! https://zone4.ca/register.asp?id=21068&lan=1&cartlevel=1

ERTC Weekly Update - Week of May 6

It’s a late one tonight! Lots of fresh, hot updates for y’all so let’s go!

Club Updates:

  1. Our 2019 Learn 2 Ride (L2R) sessions kick off this Wednesday, May 8th. Check out our website for more information on dates, times, locations, agenda, etc. Few quick highlights/reminders:

    • If you can't make any/all of the sessions, here's a summary of the information we're going to go over. If you're new to the club and can't make it, we recommend you attend another Wednesday Social Ride or a Women's Monday ride (for the ladies), so that we can ensure that you're ready to join in on a full club ride.

    • We encourage EVERYONE to attend:

      • New to riding/< 2 years group riding experience - there's lots to learn and practice!

      • Been group riding for a bit more than 2 years - there's still lots to learn and practice. Let's be real, we've all been on club rides where the 'experienced members' act like newbies.

      • Been riding for a LONG time? Great - come support the new riders so that they have every opportunity to be as great of a rider as you are!

    • Velofix will be on hand May 15 & 22, starting at 5:30pm, to assist any club members with bike maintenance questions/issues. Shawn will be able to help you with minor repairs, offer advice/guidance, or schedule you for a specific time to stop by your place for larger jobs.

  2. Our social event is no longer indeterminate! Check out what our Social Event Coordinator has to say:

*(Look at all those exclamation points! How can you not be convinced!)

**(No commitment necessary you may cancel any time.)

***You can totally bring a guest (Significant other, partner, person you’re trying to woo, someone you’re trying to convince to join the club…) for no extra cost.

Ride Updates:

  1. Tuesday Critervals start this week - Workout and intervals led by Category 2 racer Jakob Claffey. Workout will be between 7 to 8PM, however we recommend arriving 30 minutes early or riding from home to get a warm up in. The objective of this ride is to improve your high speed cornering and improve your short duration speed. This ride is open to everyone and is recommended for those looking for a workout. Current fitness does not matter as this takes place on a circuit and you will not be left behind. If you are driving directly to the Research park (as Jakob will be) please park in the parking lot alongside the southside of the shown route. See strava link here: https://www.strava.com/clubs/2845/group_events/501788

ERTC Weekly Update - Week of April 29

Hey Hey Hey it’s Fat Albert (after all the junk I ate at training camp!) with another update! I’ve thrown up a quick how-to join strava for those of you who aren’t it yet, please please please use it, instead of Facebook for your ride updates. I have written a quick tutorial to help get you on strava if you aren’t on it yet, located here.

Club Updates:
